Christmas is coming and soon the television will be full of summer holiday adverts!

Ready to make your holiday booking, fancy Cyprus this year but not sure where to start?

You can't go far wrong if you read the Hotel Reviews first!

Having worked for many years in UK Tour Operations, I've experienced first hand many holiday complaints & disappointments from angry holidaymakers. Don't make the same mistake - follow my rule: research, read and relax....

And - if you're still not entirely certain. Ask the travel agent if any of the staff have visited your favoured holiday location.

Most tour operators offer travel agent incentives to sell their holidays by taking them on "educational" visits. These usually entail a week of travelling between resorts, staying in 2 or 3 different hotels, taking part in organised excursions and generally becoming a holidaymaker for a few days whilst gaining an insight into the destination.

Above all, make sure you get it right! Otherwise it could be the most expensive and memorable experience of all - for all the wrong reasons!

A Fabulous Short Film - on Cyprus

I came across this video film on one of my Cyprus forums and thought I would share it with you.

Especially for one of our regular website visitors (John W) - just to show we're still looking after "your" island....

Cyprus competes in Francophone Games

CYPRIOT artists and sportsmen are gearing up for the 6th ‘Jeux de la Francophonie’ or Francophone Games in Lebanon this month. It will be the first time the teams have been eligible to compete in the games since Cyprus' accession to the International Francophone Organisation in 2006.

The four-yearly games bring together around 3000 competitors from 70 French speaking countries and consist of seven sports and an array of artistic events.

Cyprus will compete in two sporting events, basketball and beach volleyball. The women's basketball squad will be made up from Limassol's KV Imperial AEL, and the beach volleyball teams drawn from the male and female national squads. Two referees, Antonis Demetrios and Marinos Panayi will also be travelling to Lebanon for the sporting events. Demetrious will referee the basketball, and Panayi the football.

Cyprus will also participate in two of the cultural events. Sebough Voskeritchian, a photographer from Limassol, will represent Cyprus in the photographic event and Alexis Vagianos, a painter who has exhibited in Nicosia's K-Gallery, will showcase their work. Other artistic events will include sculpture, photography, music, dance, literature, painting, and storytelling.

Andreas Demetriou, The Minister for Education and Culture, said yesterday: "Sport is one of the cornerstones of cultural integration. Indeed for us Greeks this is both an experience and a belief, because the Olympics started out in Greece as a cultural event. Greek Culture and the culture of the Olympics are closely related, and they embody the principles of fair play, solidarity and international unity that mankind strives towards."

During the Games, Cyprus will also present a photographic exhibition entitled "Archaeological sites and monuments of Cyprus, a World Heritage Site."

Demetriou added: "The participation of our country at the Games of the Francophonie is a very important event for our country as it will help the promotion of Cyprus in Francophonic countries and the development of the existing bilateral agreement with Lebanon for cultural and scientific cooperation."

The games, which first took place in 1989 in Morocco, will run from 27th September to the 6th October 2009.

An extract taken from yesterday's online news:

With temperatures and humidity levels expected to surpass 40 degrees over the weekend, the Cyprus Red Cross Society (CRCS) has warned that it is not just those with vulnerable health who are at risk.

It therefore issued an announcement with a number of precautionary measures civilians need to take during the heat wave to avoid possible health complications.

“Drink more water than you can take,” it advised. “At least five litres a day – soft drinks and caffeine don’t help much. Drink water even if you are not thirsty. Ensure that children and the elderly are also drinking plenty of water.”

For those who work outdoors, the Society advises they consume at least 10 litres of water a day.

Symptoms of dehydration include headaches, nausea, vomiting, cramps and inability to urinate for long periods of time.

To deal with it, the CRCS says one must drink something sweet without gas, taking slow sips at a time, until one is able to urinate properly.

Photos to share from our day trip to Nicosia

We took a little trip to Nicosia on 9th July and managed to get a few photos whilst we were there.

The images on this link (to our Cyprus Stamps Blogspot site) were taken in the Turkish occupied area of Northern Cyprus, just the other side of the crossing point on Ledra Street (the main shopping district).

A couple of the photos were taken last year, not long after the new crossing point was officially opened and those of Buytuk Han (an important Ottoman Building), in Selimiye district of Nicosia were taken on this trip.

9th July was a first day of issue for Medical Plants so we managed to pick up some stamps and covers too!

It was an extremely hot day and the journey of an hour seemed to take forever, coming back home to Limassol.

Enjoy the photos!
Regards, Michele

Well, that's me finished from work for a whole week - yeahey!!! Time to catch up on some swimming and tanning in this glorious Cyprus weather and also to spend some time with our friends....

Some of our friends are selling their villa (3 bedrooms with large, private swimming pool on the edge of Souni village, about 20 minutes or so drive out of Limassol town). If you fancy having a quick peek - here's a link to some details and photos.

Our other friends have their own company in Cyprus and place dogs with foster families whilst their owners go on holiday.

Helen also puts in a lot of work at Sirius Dog Sanctuary in Limassol. The sanctuary only recently got recognised as a charity by the Cypriot government and they are badly in need of funding. They rehome waifs and strays, and more often, hunting dogs that have been abandoned. The sanctuary is looking for donations or adoptions or even new owners! It's not totally unknown for some of the dogs to have been rehomed overseas and a few have warm & friendly homes in Germany as well as those who have found welcoming homes and owners in Cyprus.

Please visit the Sirius website and look around. They are currently working on the website so if everything isn't up and running properly and you are interesting in making a donation or adopting a 4 legged friend, please drop them an email. Your contact will be very welcome....

XIII Games of the Small States of Europe - update
AFTER the second day of competition at the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe Cyprus leads the medals table with 60 decorations, including 21 gold and 27 silvers, while Iceland is second with 40 and Luxembourg in third with 16 gold out of their total 30 medals.

Cypriot shooter Kyriakos Christoforou brought an end to his fellow countryman Antonis Andreou’s reign in Men’s Skeet competition after claiming the gold medal. Antoniou finished the competition in second place after previously winning a remarkable five gold medals in five consecutive GSSE events. The two athletes had previously gone head-to-head only once at the 1995 GSSE in Luxembourg in an event which saw Andreou celebrating the gold and Christoforou in second place.

Manolina Konstantinou and Mariota Aggelopoulou representing Cyprus are the first Women’s Beach Volleyball team to secure a place in the semifinals. They overcame Jeanne Schneider and Norma Zambon of Luxembourg yesterday; winning the match in straight sets after 40 minutes of play to record their third overall victory at the Games.

At the same time both men’s and women’s volleyball national team recorded victories in their first games of the GSSE. Demetris Apostolou had seven points and four more players recorded six as Cyprus beat San Marino 3-0 after just over an hour of play, while the women’s team overcame Liechtenstein 3-1 in their first round outing.

In Men’s Tennis Singles both Cypriot representatives were eliminated during yesterday’s program. The Cypriot number two and the fourth-seed Photos Kallias was defeated by Jirka Lokaj of Liechtenstein 6-3 6-4 in the opening match on the center court of the National Tennis Center in Nicosia, while the third seeded Benjamin Balleret on Monaco beat Philippos Tsangarides 6-1, 6-1.

Women’s basketball team suffered a narrow defeat against the gold medal favorite Malta 53-48 after a hard fought battle at the Tassos Papadopoulos Eleftheria Athletic Center. Valentina Ionova led Cyprus with 12 points, while Kalia Papadopoulou chipped in with 10. Sophia Theologou was one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards for 22 minutes on the court. The Cypriot ladies are free today while tomorrow evening they face Iceland in a game that could decide the silver medal holders. The men’s basketball team continued to dominate after demolishing Iceland 87-54 and it seems that nobody can prevent them now of claiming the gold medal in the competition. Vasilis Kounas came off the bench to lead Cyprus with 14 points, while Panayiotis Trisokkas added 13. Giorgos Neophytou netted 12 points, all in the final seven minutes of the game, while Joseph Garcia and Aris Koronides had 11 and 10 points respectively. Christos Stylianides’ men take on the absolute outsiders San Marino this evening at 20:30.
