We made the Cyprus Grapevine!

A few weeks ago we were contacted with reference to taking part in an interview for the Cyprus Grapevine monthly magazine. We were a little taken aback and at first a bit hesitant but we prepared some information for them and a few days later received a telephone call with some further questions.

The sirens will be operated!

If you're on holiday in Cyprus over the next few days, please don't be scared if you hear an air raid alarm or warning sound in the early hours of the morning.

The Turks aren't invading again, it's just the Greek Cypriot way of commemorating the invasion. Peace will be shattered anywhere between 5am and 6.30am over the coming mornings.

For more information, visit this link to the Timeline of Events in Cyprus in 1974 as provided by Wikipedia.

It's great insight into the history of the Turkish Occupation in North Cyprus.

As promised, here are some images from our cruise the other weekend.

Cyprus Stamps went off on a catamaran cruise along the Limassol coastline last weekend(Saturday 3rd July) courtesy of Michele's employer.

We left the Old Port in the morning and returned in time to catch the World Cup match between Germany and Spain.

Swimming just off the coast at the point of Akrotiri RAF base, the southernmost point of Cyprus. (This one is especially for my friend John W).

On our way back to Limassol Old Port, Saturday 3 July 2010. The container ship in front is the Eagle (Norwegian) with Limassol coastline behind.

A few other images to share below, which I took with my mobile phone last month at the Aphrodite Club swimming pool in Erimi village.

Our weekend cruise from Limassol
Friday 24 October - Monday 27 October

We took a mini-cruise with Louis Cruise Lines from Limassol New Port on Friday evening, arriving in Beirut city port early Saturday morning to take in a visit to the Armenian area for shopping and later in the "Down Town" shopping areas around Star Square with the ancient Roman baths located beneath the new city buildings.

Well, it may be a Public or Bank Holiday in many parts of Europe today, including the UK but for us in sunny Cyprus - we're hard at work!

Public holidays in Cyprus are taken on the day they fall and not the nearest Monday as generally happens in UK. So for us, it was Labour Day on 1st May which was a Saturday...

Roll on 24th May when we can celebrate Kataklysmos Day or Pentecost in Cyprus and this comes from the Greek word "cataclysm" - to wash down. Commonly this holiday weekend is known as Whitsun (tide) in UK and takes place 7 weeks (50 days) after Easter Sunday.

Towns and villages across Cyprus will be celebrating with some form of water based activities and if you are here on holidays you will see the children throwing water at each other. The churches celebrate a little differently and a priest will throw a cross into the sea to be retrieved by the onlookers who will dive in after it. The lucky person who brings back the cross will receive a blessing and apparently, a sovereign.

Watch out for events happening in all the seaside towns from 22nd to 24th May 2010 to celebrate the Festival of the Flood as it may also be referred to.

World leaders have failed to deliver commitments made in 2002 to reduce the global rate of biodiversity loss by 2010, and have instead overseen alarming biodiversity declines. These findings are the result of a new paper published in the leading journal Science and represent the first assessment of how the targets made through the 2002 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) have not been met.
