A few weeks ago we were contacted with reference to taking part in an interview for the Cyprus Grapevine monthly magazine. We were a little taken aback and at first a bit hesitant but we prepared some information for them and a few days later received a telephone call with some further questions. If you're on holiday in Cyprus over the next few days, please don't be scared if you hear an air raid alarm or warning sound in the early hours of the morning. The Turks aren't invading again, it's just the Greek Cypriot way of commemorating the invasion. Peace will be shattered anywhere between 5am and 6.30am over the coming mornings. For more information, visit this link to the Timeline of Events in Cyprus in 1974 as provided by Wikipedia. It's great insight into the history of the Turkish Occupation in North Cyprus. Posted on Monday May 3 6:13:00 BST 2010 Listed under: Cyprus Life Well, it may be a Public or Bank Holiday in many parts of Europe today, including the UK but for us in sunny Cyprus - we're hard at work! Public holidays in Cyprus are taken on the day they fall and not the nearest Monday as generally happens in UK. So for us, it was Labour Day on 1st May which was a Saturday... Roll on 24th May when we can celebrate Kataklysmos Day or Pentecost in Cyprus and this comes from the Greek word "cataclysm" - to wash down. Commonly this holiday weekend is known as Whitsun (tide) in UK and takes place 7 weeks (50 days) after Easter Sunday. Towns and villages across Cyprus will be celebrating with some form of water based activities and if you are here on holidays you will see the children throwing water at each other. The churches celebrate a little differently and a priest will throw a cross into the sea to be retrieved by the onlookers who will dive in after it. The lucky person who brings back the cross will receive a blessing and apparently, a sovereign. Watch out for events happening in all the seaside towns from 22nd to 24th May 2010 to celebrate the Festival of the Flood as it may also be referred to. biodiversity declines. These findings are the result of a new paper published in
